Obsessed since third grade…

Harriett’s is an Independent bookshop & writing space celebrating female writers, activists, and artists. It all started when Jeannine Cook found a vacant storefront on Fishtown’s bustling Girard Avenue corridor, the bar-and-restaurant heavy strip that leads from Frankford Avenue to the river. The landlord was willing to take a chance on an independent brick-and-mortar, so Cook signed on, naming her business after Harriett Tubman, who she said she’s been obsessed with since third grade.

Jeannine’s Recommendations

What books should I read?

Harriett’s Bookshop hand-picks their book collection every month based on specific themes.  While the collection continues to rotate,  Jeannine’s top recommendations and favorites are below. If you’re looking for a more personalized recommendation stop by Harriett’s Bookshop.

The Vanishing Half: From The New York Times-bestselling author of The Mothers, a stunning new novel about twin sisters, inseparable as children, who ultimately choose to live in two very different worlds, one black and one white.

Bound for the Promised Land: Biography of Harriett Tubman: The essential, “richly researched” biography of Harriet Tubman, revealing a complex woman who “led a remarkable life, one that her race, her sex, and her origins make all the more extraordinary”

Such a Fun Age: A striking and surprising debut novel from an exhilarating new voice, Such a Fun Age is a page-turning and big-hearted story about race and privilege, set around a young black babysitter, her well-intentioned employer, and a surprising connection that threatens to undo them both.
